The first of December! And this means the first "real" door of my fishtailbraid advent calender. Today I have an updo for you: a messy dutsh seashell bun as the title already tells. I already showed the regular braiding pattern of a normal fishtailbraid to you, so we can level up a bit now, by instroducing the french respectively dutch technique. As this updo is created of a dutch braid  you braid under the main strands. The basic instructions for a regular fishtail braid can be found on the first advent Sunday.

Alles meine Haare. Ich habe beim Breitziehen hier wirklich alles gegeben.
All my own hair. I did my very best pancaking the braid here.

As you pick up new hair on your way over the head the technique is the following:
Section a smal part of hair from the front side and split it into two eqaul strands. Split a small section from the outside of the left strand, braid this small strand under the left main strand and add it to the inside of the right mainstrand. Same on the other side: section a small strand from the outside of the right main strand, bring it under and add to the left main strand. Repeat the step on the left side and now pick up some new hair and bring it also under the left main strand to add it on the inside of the right main strand. Same on the right: first a regular braiding stitch sectioning a tiny bit of the right main strand, bring it under and add it to the left strand. Then pick up new hair from the right side of the head, braid under and add.

Keep on braiding like this until you reach the nape or in this sideswept version the hairline behind one ear. If your hair is rather thin like mine, always pick up the whole section of hair next to the braid to add it in. If your hair is rather thick, only pick up small strands from the hairline to add them in, because otherwise the pattern won't look like a fishtail but more like a normal threestranded a dutch braid. The remaining hair which is not yet added in, when you reach the nape can be split into two and added direktly to the two mainstrands. With hair of medium thickness you will have to see for yourself which technique works best.
Now that you have all hair added in you just continue braiding a normal fishtailbraid downwards without further adding in till the end of your hair. Secure with an elastic and let it hang down like it is or roll up and pin in place with pins or screws for this seashellbun like in the pictures.

As this hairstyle here is messy, which means the braid is pancaked, there is one additional step necessary: the pulling at the sides of the braids, the pancaking. You don't do that in the end after finishing the braid, you do it while you braid, otherwise the braid will be too tight to loosen it afterwards. I braid around 5-10 stitches, then I pancake. Check your work with a second mirror when you are still working at the back of your head. As soon as you can take the braid over your shoulder this pulling at the sides is super easy.

Dezember.
The next door is waiting for you on December 3rd.
